You cannot effectively start a building project without first knowing what the plans are for it to look like. Currently, my father-in-law is building a house and it's going to be beautiful. As I write this there is only a foundation. But I already know what the house will look like. I know where every room will be, every closet, bathroom, etc. Why? Because you don't build a house without first creating blue prints.

Why would we start any project differently?
It's funny to think about now... but I remember beginning many projects not knowing what the outcome would be exactly. It always lead to disappointment because there was always an expectation that was never met.
Expectation of the final outcome should define the beginning point of every project.
One must inspect their expectations to achieve success.
It doesn't matter what the success is. Whether it is a home, relationship, or business you must not just write down expectations. You must define the steps it takes to get to the desired outcome. What walls to your plan need to be built first? What is the foundation you are building upon? What are the tools and skills you will need to develop or contract out?

That is why the beginning always starts with the end. If you have an expectation for something to bear certain fruit tomorrow defines the seed you plant and water today.
