Momentum is easier to steer than to start... At least that's what my good friend John C. Maxwell told me. But it's true. How do you start it though? Well, we know one thing: Only true leaders can create momentum. There are qualities someone must have in order to create and jumpstart momentum in a team.

Embrace the resistance.
Resistance is your friend in becoming the leader that creates momentum. I was teaching my son to ride his bike over the summer (almost there). What I noticed is that the harder he had to push his little legs to make that bike go, the better. Why? Because it trained his legs to do the correct motion needed to keep momentum on his bike. Are you feeling resistance in gaining momentum in your organization? Embrace is as you see the glimmer of hope in what works... Those are the things you will repeat forever.

Don't get distracted.
You have to stay focused on what the proper actions are and be consistent. The enemy of consistency is distraction. Innovation is great but don't allow it to distract you from doing the things that helped you achieve success in the first place.
Remember: The greatest enemy to tomorrows success is the success you experienced today. Don't let things distract you from what is important. How do you prioritize those things worth distraction?
Ask yourself three things:
1) What is the requirement or time or energy.
2) What is the return of the requirement?
3) What is the reward?
You will know very quickly what to prioritize from there. Wish I had done that before I bough my $3,000 vacuum. Oh Well!
